15 Top Tips to Lower Your Energy Bills

With energy bills once again soaring in April following Ofgem’s 6.4% price increase, now is the perfect time to focus on conserving energy and saving money. These simple, straightforward steps will not only lower your bills but also reduce your carbon footprint when made part of your regular routine.

In the kitchen

  1. Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly. The more they ice up, the harder they have to work, which uses more energy and drives up your bills.
  2. Air dry your clothes. An outdoor washing line is the most energy-efficient way to dry clothes. If it’s raining, an indoor airer is better than a tumble dryer.
  3. Unplug appliances. Switch off devices when not in use to eliminate unnecessary standby power drain.
  4. Use oven heat. After cooking, leave the oven door open for a while to let the heat warm up your kitchen.
  5. Choose energy-efficient products. Use LED lighting and appliances that are energy efficient.
  6. Boil only what you need. Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need to save energy.
  7. Cold wash. Use a cold wash cycle in your washing machine whenever possible. It’s cheaper and just as effective for most loads.
  8. Air fry and slow cook. If you’ve got one, use a microwave or slow cooker instead of the oven. A microwave uses about half the energy of a conventional oven, and slow cookers are up to 75% more efficient.
  9. Full loads only. Wait until your dishwasher is full before starting it. A half load uses just as much electricity and hot water as a full load.

The rest of the house

  1. Turn down the thermostat. Even lowering your thermostat by just one degree could save you around £80 a year.
  2. Take showers instead of baths. If a family of four swapped one bath a week for a five-minute shower, they’d save up to £20 a year on gas bills.
  3. Mind your tap. Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing. A running tap can waste up to 6 litres of water per minute.
  4. Switch appliances to standby. Unplug phone chargers once your devices are fully charged to prevent unnecessary power use.
  5. Switch to LED lightbulbs. LED bulbs use less energy and last longer, and remember to only light the rooms you’re in.
  6. Insulate your home. A lot of heat escapes through the roof, so make sure you have proper loft insulation in place.
