Energy Saving Tips For The Summer: Cut Energy Costs Before Winter Arrives
During the warmer months, it’s easy to overlook our heating systems since we’re not using them as much. However, we’re still consuming energy, so it’s important to consider how we can reduce usage and save on our bills. For many, especially with the cost-of-living crisis still in effect, high energy bills remain a huge burden.
Since we don’t need to think about heating as much, summer may actually be the best time of year to start planning how to reduce energy bills. With plenty of time before the weather changes, you have the opportunity to prepare and implement strategies that will pay off in the long run.
In this blog, we’ll provide some energy-saving tips for the summer that will help keep you cool while also saving money.
1. Unplug Devices When Not in Use
Many electronic devices continue to consume power even when turned off. Unplug chargers, appliances, and electronics when they’re not in use, or use power strips to easily switch them off.
2. Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances
Consider upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, such as those with a higher energy rating. These use less power and can save you money in the long run.
3. Maximise Natural Ventilation
Take advantage of the cooler nighttime temperatures by opening windows and using fans to bring in fresh air.
Close the windows in the morning to trap the cool air inside, reducing the need for electric fans during the day.
4. Use Fans to Circulate Air
If you have ceiling fans, use them to circulate air, making rooms feel cooler without lowering the thermostat. Remember to set them to spin counterclockwise in the summer for a cooling effect.
Place portable fans in strategic locations to improve airflow and create a breeze, which can reduce the need for air conditioning.
5. Block Out the Sun’s Heat
Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day to block out the sun’s rays and keep your indoor space cooler.
Consider applying reflective window film to windows that receive a lot of sun exposure; this can reduce the amount of heat entering your home.
6. Cook Wisely
Use an outdoor grill to cook meals, keeping the heat outside. If cooking indoors, opt for the microwave, slow cooker, or toaster instead of the stove or oven.
When cooking indoors, use the kitchen exhaust fan to remove heat and humidity. This will also diffuse any cooking smells.
7. Reduce Water Heating Costs
Set your water heater to a lower temperature to save on energy costs – this will still provide water hot enough for daily use.
Additionally, consider insulating your water heater and pipes to minimise heat loss, so your water heater doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperature.
8. Improve Insulation
Inspect your home for air leaks around windows, doors, and other openings, and seal any gaps to prevent cool air from escaping.
Ensure your attic is properly insulated to prevent heat from entering your home.
9. Use Energy-Efficient Lighting
Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs, which use less energy and emit less heat, reducing the need for cooling.
During the day, maximise natural light instead of relying on artificial lighting, which can add heat to your home.
10. Consider Renewable Energy Options
If your budget allows and conditions are right, consider installing solar panels to harness the sun’s energy and reduce your reliance on grid electricity.
Explore solar water heating systems, which can provide hot water more efficiently during the sunny months.
11. Dry Clothes Outside
Avoid using the tumble dryer during the summer months and take advantage of the warm weather by drying clothes on a line or clothes horses outside.
By following these tips, you can lower your energy consumption during the summer, leading to significant savings on your energy bills and creating a more comfortable home environment.
