Energy Price Cap Update: April 2026

The UK energy price cap has been updated again, with the changes taking effect from 1 April 2026. In welcome news for millions of households, this latest adjustment comes amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

Ofgem have announced that the annual bill for a typical dual fuel household using the standard amount of energy will be reduced by 6.7% from £1,758 to £1,641 per year, which means a decrease of around £117 annually (roughly £10 per month) for the average household.

It’s important to remember that the price cap doesn’t set a total spending limit, it only caps the price per unit of energy and standing charges. Your actual bill still depends on your energy usage.

What Is the Energy Price Cap?

The energy price cap, set by Ofgem, limits the maximum amount that suppliers can charge per unit of gas and electricity. It’s designed to protect consumers from excessive prices, particularly those on standard variable tariffs. However, it’s important to note that the cap is not a total limit on your bill – actual costs depend on your usage. The cap merely restricts the price per unit and the standing charges.

The next one comes into effect from the 1st of April 2026. The cap is reviewed and updated every three months, and the next assessment for the period 1 July – 30 September 2026 will be published by 27 May 2026.

With prices coming down in April, now could be a good time to consider fixing your tariff. Our free home energy service, LEAP, can help you explore your options during a free home energy visit, offering tailored advice in the comfort of your own home. Find out more below.
