How Golf Clubs Can Attract More Visitors with EV Chargers

Golf clubs are becoming the go-to place for a full day out. People are no longer just visiting for their usual morning game. As facilities improve, clubs are evolving and positioning themselves as destinations rather than just sporting venues, offering everything from golf and meals, to shopping and even spa experiences.

Take Thorney Golf Club, located northeast of Peterborough. Not only do they have their lake course and par 3 academy course, they also offer a clubhouse with a diverse menu, including Sunday lunches. In addition, the club hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from private celebrations like weddings and birthday parties to community gatherings. Similarly, Tydd St Giles Golf and Country Club, nestled in the Cambridgeshire Fens, offers more than just an 18-hole golf course. Their £2 million leisure facility includes a fully equipped gym, an indoor heated pool, a sauna, a steam room, and a café and bar, ensuring visitors have everything they need for a relaxing and enjoyable day.

This shift is attracting visitors for much longer stays, and it makes golf clubs the perfect location for EV chargers. Why? Because whilst golfers are enjoying their games, having lunch, or browsing the shops, they typically park for several hours, making it the ideal time to charge their EVs.

But if you’re a golf club owner, let’s just take a moment to remind ourselves why you should care about EVs in the first place.

The Government’s Commitment to Net Zero and the Role of EVs

As of July 2025, the UK government has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Transport alone was responsible for 29% of the total carbon emissions in 2023, so as part of the solution, the government has announced no new petrol or diesel cars will be produced or sold after 2030, and no new pure diesel or petrol vans after 2035. This is where electric vehicles come in. EVs offer a way to reduce these emissions, because full battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce zero carbon emissions at the tailpipe. So, the aim is to transition to EVs to help meet the net zero goal.

According to USwitch, in 2023, EVs accounted for nearly a quarter (23.9%) of new car sales in the UK, and by April 2024, there were around 1.1 million fully electric cars on the road. With these numbers steadily increasing, the demand for EV chargers will only keep growing.

What Does This Have to Do with EV Chargers?

As the number of EVs out on the road increases, naturally so will the demand for EV charging points. Stats from the UK Government show that as of April 2025, there were 76,507 public EV chargers installed across the UK. 49% of these are what we call “destination chargers”, meaning those located at the end of a journey or where a driver may typically stop for an extended period of time. In other words, just under half of all EV chargers are installed at places like hotels, retail parks, and leisure centres, making golf clubs the perfect fit for chargers.

Why Install EV Chargers at Your Golf Club?

A 2021 survey by Golf Management Group showed that 87% of golf clubs are considering installing EV chargers. Data from England Golf reveals that there are 1,735 golf clubs across England, with more than 730,000 members. So as the demand for EV chargers grows, installing them at your club or starting to plan for their installation will help you stay ahead of the curve. Not only will it attract more visitors, but it also makes it easier for existing members who already visit the club regularly. They can charge their cars while they’re at the club, killing two birds with one stone as the saying goes.

Benefits Beyond Attracting More Visitors

There are a variety of benefits to installing EV chargers at your golf club that go beyond just attracting more visitors. We’ve already covered these in another blog, so we won’t dive into all of them here. But it’s worth noting that by providing EV charging stations, you position your club as environmentally friendly and forward-thinking, helping to boost your reputation. It also makes it easier for your members to stick with their green lifestyle, encouraging long-term loyalty. And the best part is, it can can create an additional revenue stream for your business.
