Do you want to save money, or is it that you want to join the green force against climate change? We’ve got you covered, as we will be sharing some simple energy advice to get you started on your journey. In this article, we will highlight the main actions you can carry out to save you money, carbon and energy.
LED lighting for the win
When it comes to lighting, remember LED lighting is KING! This type of lighting can use up to 75% less energy according to Energy.Gov. Make sure to check your light bulbs around your house, as you may have a few sneaky fluorescent or halogen ones hiding; plus don’t forget to check your outdoor lighting too! This may be some of the best energy advice.
A great top tip for outdoor lighting is to use solar-generated, this means that the lights can charge up in the daytime which will allow them to glow in the dark.
Don’t forget about Insulation!
Just because insulation is out of sight, it doesn’t mean it should be out of mind! Your heating system will have to work harder if you are losing heat quickly due to poor insulation. When it comes to insulation, you need to be thinking about a few things, such as wall, roof, floor and pipe insulation. If one of these is not insulated properly you could be missing a trick! Another area to look at is double glazed windows, according to MDG double glazing can reduce heat loss by up to an amazing 64%. By reviewing and considering the above points, it will help you to minimize heat loss; especially over the winter months.
Are you buying a new house?
When considering buying a house you should also look at the energy rating or Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). This will give you an insight into how energy efficient the house is and it will also show you where the building needs to improve. Energy ratings go from A right down to G. If it’s a G, run for the hills! Unless you are looking for a development project. Ideally, a house with a C or above is what you want.
Switch to a green energy tariff
According to Energy Saving Trust “Currently, 28% of the UK’s electricity comes from renewable energy, and this figure is set to grow over the next few years.” Why not join the movement and move over to green energy! There is no stress or mess, as you don’t need to get anything installed, as green energy comes straight from the National Grid. All you need to do is compare the best green energy tariffs on the market, which you can do using our switching platform to see the best deals. Simple energy advice.
Don’t waste space on your roof, Install solar PV
Have you thought about making your roof look snazzy? Then why not install solar PV and make the most of the sun’s renewable energy. According to Energy Saving Trust “installing solar energy panels could save you up to £240 a year on your energy bills, or two weeks’ worth of groceries for a family of four.” Not only can you install solar PV, but there are many other renewable energy technologies that may be a great fit for you, such as air source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps, solar water heating and much more! Renewable energy holds endless benefits for you and the planet.
Top tips to save energy around the house
Every little counts, that’s why we have decided to give you some top tips to save energy around your home.
- Many people keep the window slightly open for large amounts of time while keeping the heating turned on. From this, you will not only be losing a lot of heat but money too. Instead, occasionally, turn off your heating system, open the windows for 5 minutes, then close the windows again and turn the heating back on.
- Work in an area that you can use natural light. If not, make sure to use LED lightbulbs.
- When you switch the kettle on, make sure you only fill it up with the amount of water you need. This will make sure you are not using any unnecessary energy.
- If you are using a cooking pot, make sure to use the lid!
