A Day in the Life of Mike: Building Strong Relationships With RSLs

Mike is one of our Key Account Executives, working closely with housing providers to make sure they get the most from our Void Energy Management service. Follow his day as he juggles changing priorities, builds trusted relationships, and helps ensure tenants have warm, powered homes, even at the busiest times of year.

What does a typical day look like for you?

As a key account executive there is no such thing as a typical day, we try to be as organised and prepared as possible as far as the day-to-day aspects of the job go, but we have to be prepared to react to changing priorities and needs at a moments notice.

Can you briefly explain what your role involves?

The Key Account Executive role is, on the face of it, quite simple. Our main job is to ensure that all our clients get the best possible use out of the services we provide. This can involve guiding clients, educating and often sitting down together and working out a solution and way of working that fit in with everyone concerned.

How do you stay in touch and build relationship with our RSLs?

We stay in touch with clients in a whole variety of ways. This is a digital age so communication options are wide and varied. Clients can get in touch via email and teams, or get a message to us via live chat, or, if they wish to keep it old school, pick up the phone and call. We are happy to be contacted in the way that the client requires at any given time.

In my view, all relationships either business or personal are built on people and on truth. Getting to know clients, how they work and what makes the individuals in the organisation tick is key to building a working relationship that endures. Simple rule is always do what you promised you would do and don’t do what you promised not to do.

What’s the most rewarding part of your role?

The most rewarding part is knowing that you have been a part of making someone’s day better. This could be a stressed client who you have assisted or a tenant that you work with the client to sort out an issue for.

Can you share a memorable moment or success story with an RSL?

As far as a success story goes, last Christmas springs to mind. The company and our clients were exceptionally busy trying to get a variety of properties resolved before the festive season. As a direct result of the work we did at that time, many people had a home for Christmas, and you really can’t put a value on that.

What’s always on your desk (or in your work bag)?

My desk always has a notebook, more cables than are really required. As well as a small, crocheted potato with a happy little face.

What do you like to do in your downtime or lunch breaks?

I have three teenagers and a very busy dance life, what is downtime again?

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about your job?

Finally, something people might be surprised to learn about the key accounts team. We genuinely care about helping our clients and we love catching up with them.
