A Day in the Life of Rachel: Helping Residents Save Energy and Money with a Free Home Energy Visit
Follow a day in the life of Rachel as she delivers a free home energy visit, helping a local resident save energy and reduce their bills.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My workday begins at 9, and I usually start by checking my emails and reading through the notes for the home energy visits I have that day. I usually carry out three home energy visits a day, giving face-to-face advice to residents. In between these visits, I carry out outreach work to promote the LEAP service.
Can you briefly explain what your role involves?
My role involves providing energy advice to residents in their homes, building and maintaining relationships with local organisations, attending local events, and promoting the LEAP scheme. I help residents save money on their energy bills, feel warmer in their homes, and signpost them to other help or support that may benefit them. We are an entirely free service focused on bettering the lives of people in our community.
Seeing the relief residents feel when I’m able to help them and take away some of their stress is the most rewarding part of my job.
Can you share a memorable moment or success story with a resident?
The visit that comes to mind is the first time I secured fuel vouchers for a resident. She was at the end of her emergency credit and was sacrificing shopping for food to keep her home warm. The joy and relief she felt when I told her I’d be able to secure a fuel voucher will stay with me for a long time.
How does your role support the wider mission of Green Energy Switch?
By helping residents be more energy efficient and by promoting LEAP and GES within the community.
What three words would you use to describe your work?
Rewarding, Important, impactful.
What’s always on your desk (or in your work bag)?
I always carry a measuring tape and water bottle with me.
Do you have a go-to playlist, snack, or habit that keeps you focused?
I have a spotify work playlist to keep me focused when working on outreach.
What do you like to do in your downtime or lunch breaks?
I’ll usually catch up on the news and social media during lunch.
How do you unwind after a busy day?
I like to play netball or go for a walk in the evening.
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about your job?
The number of lightbulbs I change a week!
